Mastering the Addictive Personality A Specialist Yoga Teacher Training
Module One: We will explore 12 Step and SMART recovery, trauma and the links to addictive behaviour. Different types of addiction, including substance & process addictions, “Chem Sex” and, the effects of addictions on the mind, body, hormones, & emotions will be examined. The use of medications including anti-depressants and other prescription drugs will be explored plus there will be an overview of the psychiatric issues involved in addiction and recovery. Yoga, pranayama and meditation will be a core practise throughout.
Module Two: This module will focus on specific postures and their direct effects upon the mind, body and hormonal flow. We will explore the power of intention, the effects of pranayama & meditation, and the experience of mantra. The need for self-parenting, acceptance and boundaries in recovery will be a fundamental part of the weekend. This module will focus on how to teach yoga to master the addictive personality in different setting including prisons, rehabs, gyms and dedicated yoga centres. We will explore the issues raised when working with clients who are in treatment and in harm minimisation centres. Yoga, pranayama and meditation will be a core practise throughout.
Module Three: The third module will look at diet and detoxification including life without sugar and other stimuli including caffeine. We will discuss the importance of a spiritual practice, including replacing acting out with ceremony and ritual. There will be a focus on healthy sexuality and intimacy. We will create a tool box for long-term recovery and relapse prevention. Part of the module will look at how to set up, run and publicise classes and groups and how to to make the best use of social media. Yoga, pranayama and meditation will be a core practise throughout.
Specialist Teachers: The core teachings will be delivered by Carolyn Cowan. Carolyn is a psychosexual & relationship therapist and the lead trainer on the Mother’s Journey Teacher Training. Carolyn is a sex addiction specialist and is clean sober from multiple addictions since 1991.
External lecturers will include: Cassandra Jay works full time in private practice in Buckinghamshire (Near High Wycombe), Oxfordshire (North Oxford) and Central London (Harley Street) and in a Psychotherapy Centre specialising in Sex and love Addiction. She also works with those convicted of sexual offences and has spent time working with charities and organisations specialising in the safe reintegration of sex offenders into the community and the support of survivors of sexual abuse and rape. Cassandra is an affiliate member of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and a general member of the college of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT), British Association Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and National Council of Psychotherapists (NCP).
Joel Korn is a trauma trained counsellor, has moved from London to Birmingham where he had his private counselling practice where he specialised in: Addictions & Compulsive Behaviours including a good understanding around Chemsex; Sex and Relationships counselling for people living with a Disability & Additional Support Needs; Gender & Sexuality; and Young People. Joel is passionate about health and LGBT inequalities; transcultural issues and has written for various online magazines/websites such as Baseline Magazine for people living with and affected by HIV and/or hepatitis. Please note: Based on teacher availability, the contents of each weekend may change but all changes will be reflected in the weekend descriptions.
Alessia Avellino has spent most of her adult life working with body practices in order to heal emotional trauma, specialising in process addiction and eating disorders and in how the two are closely related. She believes that it is possible to recover from a long standing eating disorder through the practices of Kundalini Yoga specifically directed to addictive behaviour, as taught on this course. She is committed to empowering anyone who is willing to take their healing into their own hands, learn the practices, get back into their bodies, manage their triggering thoughts and be free to enjoy life fully once more. Alessia has been teaching several styles of yoga since 2004, is a practising artist and is a qualified Shamanic Practitioner.
