The cycle of bingeing and purging is profoundly linked to shame. The lack of self-worth triggers the eating cycle, the stuffing of the feelings of self-hatred, and the resulting shame spiral leads to the purging.

Emptying the stomach and the intestines in such a violent way can then trigger the serotonin to be released, leading to a temporary sense of calm.

Long-term bulimia has strong consequences on the mind, body, spirit connection, causing problems with the metabolism, the skin, teeth and intestines. The continual shame wreaks havoc with intimacy, friendships and the sense of the self.

On the MAP training we cover this recovery in depth along with other forms of self-harm.
